Although there was plenty going on all across the reserve today, for many visitors there was really only one story – the spotted crake! More on that in a minute, first here’s today’s summary of the birds seen…
When bird books use words like ‘shy’ and ‘secretive’ and ‘skulking’ you know that even a brief glimpse is a privilege. Luckily our spotted crake hasn’t read those books and showed beautifully throughout the day.
Early birders picked it up fairly easily, on the right-hand side of the view from the Reedbed Hide. There, across the water, is an area of mud, stones and thin reeds. It is this ‘beach’ where the crake is being seen.
Well, to be fair, there were times when the crake disappeared for a bit and, as we know, there are no guarantees in nature, but as ever a bit of patience was rewarded by some exceptional views.
How exceptional? Well, maybe it’s easier to show that to tell. Luckily, Ian Morris was on hand today to video the bird. So, to whet your appetite, here’s thirty-nine seconds of this fantastic addition to the birds of Old Moor. Thanks Ian.
Until next time.
