Hello again, it’s once again time for the sightings and today we have good news of birds of prey sightings.
At Adwick there was an osprey at briefly. A few people managed to see it and Karen (assist warden) tweeted that it had left Adwick and was heading towards Old Moor. Despite a lot of looking, we never managed to pick it up…every bird in a tree was a possible osprey…
Gary Haywood managed to see it and he told me that it was close enough to get a photo on his phone! Apparently it had been fishing before it flew off.
Here’s the photo from Gary.
Birds of prey at Old Moor were pretty good today. We had 3 buzzards, at least one cc marsh harrier, kestrel and a sparrowhawk.
Here are the sightings on the map from the Mere, the Wader Scrape and Wath Ings today. Many of these birds were flying around in these areas today so for instance, the 5 dunlin might be the same group but in different places. As per usual, if you click on the picture you will get a larger and sharper view.
In addition to that, we had a sighting of a Lesser Whitethroat on Green Lane as well as goldfinches, linnets, blue tits and blackbirds. Green woodpeckers were heard from the hides opposite Green Lane today and Adam Hutt tweeted that this morning, there were two very vocal ones close to the Family Hide. Also a Water Rail from the Reedbed Screen and Blackcap (4+) and 4+ Whitethroat at Bolton.
Redshank from the Wader Scrape.
Here's a little video of the juv Shelduck seen from the Wader Scrape today.
Graham Speight was at Edderthorpe today and tweeted his sightings. Here they are – 41 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, a juv Little Ringed Plover, 10 Ringed Plover which included 1 juv, 2 Greenshank, a Black Tailed Godwit, 408 Lapwing, 168 Teal and one Willow Tit.
We also have sightings from Adwick today via Gary Haywood on Twitter. As well as the Osprey, he saw the SEO again (short eared owl), 2 Whinchat, 1 Redstart, 24 Yellow Wagtail, 14 Grey Partridge, 1 Golden Plover, I Green Sandpiper and 1 Common Sandpiper.
That's it and so I'll leave today with another little video of a lovely greenshank. There's a bit of a story here in that it was dive bombed quite aggressively by a lapwing when it went into a certain bit of mud on the Field Pools today.
