The Wigtown Bay Ospreys seem to have definitely gone, I have received no more sightings of Ospreys over Wigtown Bay since the 1st of September. Just as well with the weather we are currently experiencing, lets hope they were safely to the South before it arrived!

Apparently there are still this year's two chicks and Black 80, the 2006 Glaslyn born adult male, still to be seen at NTS Threave Ospreys, the next nearest osprey viewing centre at Castle Douglas. Their chicks were thought to be a few days younger than the Wigtown ones so that probably accounts for the time difference.

If anyone out there has more recent information then me, please let me know.

Ian

  • As promised latest news from the other D&G Ospreys sites:

NTS Threave: Same news as before, two chicks and the adult male, black 80 were still being seen at the nest last week. They seem to be waiting for a break in the weather before starting their journey South.

WWT Caerlaverock: Last sighting, 11th September, one (unidentified) bird at the nest.

RSPB Mersehead also had a passing migrant osprey seen at the reserve last week, so presumably there are still birds passing through from further North in Scotland, or perhaps even Scandinavia.

  • The Threave 2011 chicks were blue JE & JF (with white writing) they were the next two chicks to be ringed in sequence after our Wigtown Bay chicks, JC and JD.

I have a meeting with the staff from Threave and Caerlaverock this morning so I'll find out the latest news then and post it on here.

  • Thanks for Osprey update - I hope Black 80 and the 2 chicks at Threave stayed safe in the wind.  Do you know ring colours and numbers of those two?

Any exciting Goose arrivals in the Bay yet?

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
