Venture into the woods today and you’ll certainly find a surprise.  It’s been a long time coming but the Yurt is up and running!

In just one day, three guys transformed an empty platform into our new multi-functional visitor space.

Coombes has been an RSPB site for 52 years, tucked away just outside Leek.  Locally we are known for the peace and tranquility of our woodland, and that will never change. However, this year's woodland makeover will be invaluable in our efforts to excite and engage children and families with nature. The yurt is an important (and beautiful) part of our ambitious plans.

So here we have it - a stunning, handmade Mongolian Yurt.  Thanks to the Churnet Valley Living Landscape Partnership and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the vision of a functional space out on the reserve has finally come true.

From meetings to events, school groups to office space, the Yurt is just one of the exciting new installations at Coombes. The use of a cosy indoor space, complete with wood burner, will help us to grow as more and more people visit and enjoy the woodland.

Join us for our annual Open Day on Saturday 20th which will see the grand unveiling of the Yurt, and a new accessible path around the Young Woodland Loop. The Open Day will also give you the chance to be among the first to experience our new Natural Play Trail! Follow your map around the woods to discover the hidden depths of outdoor play, including a mud kitchen, balance beams and a fairy village!

See you there!
