Walking out onto the reserve this morning I was greeted with the usual chirps and trills of bird song. It is wonderful detecting the first tell-tell signs of spring returning to our gardens, countryside and reserves. However, another sound struck me as I took those first steps onto the reserve; not quite harmonising the chirps and trills were squeals, laughs and cries of delight.

Hordes of families were making the most of a beautiful, sunny, February morning. Many were venturing out on our Wildlife Hide and Seek trail; others were thundering towards the pond and on towards our Family nature play trail (our wild play area).

Seeing a full car park, children grasping trail guides, just desperate to get going, filled me with a great sense of pride.   Coombes is great, people are recognising it and I get to be part of it. It also fills me with excitement.

As our wildlife starts to wake up, so do we, suddenly as if a switch has been flipped (a switch that takes forever to flip and I call this “waiting to see daylight at 6pm”). We’re starting to peek outside again, dreaming of BBQ’s and long summer evenings. As well as dreaming of alfresco dining we’re also starting to think about getting outdoors.  We’re thinking about getting the kids out and about too, where we can do it and what’s on offer.

So why am I excited? Like I said Coombes is great, it is only going to get greater, more people are going to appreciate that and EVERYONE CAN BE PART OF IT. I can’t wait to show everyone what Coombes has got to offer. We’ve got lots of events and activities planned for you this year, kicking off your spring and racing you into summer.

I’m sorry, where are my manners? I haven’t even introduced myself. My name is Katy and I am your new Visitor Experience Officer. I am here to show you the delights of Coombes Valley; all its residents, trails, secret hideaways and games.

By giving nature a home, we can also give discovery, adventure and excitement a home. So what have you done this half term? Or what are you planning to do this weekend? Kick start your spring with a trip to Coombes Valley because we’ve got a lot to show you. Weave your way along our wildlife trails, following the prints of animals following the same trails the night before. Delve into our pond and spot the first frog of the year. Or just stroll round letting those first sights and sounds of spring envelop you.

Whatever takes your fancy there is plenty to do here at Coombes.

Make Coombes your home this year. It’s going to be great.
