Hi, my name is Tim and I am 14 years old.

I have just enrolled on my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award in which I have to volunteer somewhere for 3 or 6 months. I have chosen to do my volunteering at RSPB Coombes and Churnet Valley for 3 months. Throughout the next 3 months I will be taking pictures of the valley and describing how it changes and if I’m lucky I may get a few wildlife pictures.

I started last Sunday when I went on a guided walk with Audrey and Nick, to get familiar with the environment.  We managed to spot a hare, a flock of siskins at the bottom of the Valley, the great spotted woodpeckers in the trees by the visitor centre and a heron. We learnt about the history of the site, the woodland management and even the ghost stories. Over the coming weeks I will be recording spring growth throughout the valley, the arrival of migrant and resident birds, insect life and flora.

Today we were greeted by a snowy landscape and 2 degrees Celsius. The walk was extremely muddy and the river was very high.
