The dark nights are her e, Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night are already quickly fading from the memory and Christmas is just a few weeks away. Chris Lusted gives you the lowdown if you're thinking about some new gear for yourself or a loved one.

"We are holding a Binocular and Telescope Day here on Sunday 23 November (10am-4pm). If you are looking for a Christmas gift and you're unsure about any aspect of binoculars, telescopes, tripods or other accessories, call in to see us. It is a chance to try our broad range of binoculars and 'scopes on the nature reserve, with the support of experienced and informed staff and volunteers.  We may even have a surprise or two on the day!

In the meantime, here are a few of my top tips for the winter:

  • To make the most of the poor light and shorter days of winter, use binoculars or a telescope with a larger front objective lens and lower magnification to give you brighter image.
  • If your equipment gets a good soaking, don’t put it away damp or wet. Let it dry naturally, never near a heat source such as a radiator. Just wipe the body over with a clean dry cloth, and leave it to dry.
  • Clean your lenses carefully, removing all the dust and grit by gently blowing or brushing away. If your optics are particularly dirty or greasy, use a good quality lens cloth and a solvent based lens cleaner to clean them. This will help restore colour saturation, contrast and sharpness.
  • Store your optical gear in a dry place. Damp can cause serious damage to any optical equipment. Care of your equipment will improve your viewing and extend its life. (And, of course, we can help with all your cleaning and, if necessary, repair and service needs!).

If you are unable to visit on 23rd, we also offer a one-hour personal demo service; please call us on 01492 584091 to book."
