Plenty of birds are now starting to sing on the reserve which is a encouraging sign of spring on its way. Woodlarks have been singing on the Western heath and the Eastern heath off the main path from the car park. Around decoy pond Great Spotted Woodpeckers have been heard drumming and a dozen Bullfinches have been seen around the car park.

Even though signs of spring are on their way, large flocks of finches are being seen in the larches including Lesser Redpoll, Siskin and Goldfinches. Small flocks of Redwings have also been seen passing though near the car park.

Mixed flocks have been seen down near the boardwalk and sphagnum paddock consisting of Marsh Tits, Coal Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Treecreepers and Bullfinches.

At the veteran oak a pair of Nuthatches and several Treecreepers were seen feeding along the outer branches. Look out for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers around here as one was seen last month.

A Yellowhammer was singing on the western heath last week as well as a hunting Kestrel and 3 Buzzards overhead. Several Green Woodpeckers have been seen on both heaths feeding.

Several Snipe have been seen on the wet flushes off the main path near the Nightjar view point on the Eastern heath as well as a male Mandarin Duck east of the decoy pond on the stream.
