The keen eyed amongst you will have notice that two projects have recently started at Boyton and Hollesley reserves. At Boyton Marshes we are continuing the construction of the Flybury Point lagoon project. This project will create a 30 hectare new freshwater wetland predominantly on the former arable land that the RSPB purchased in 2015. In 2021 we created 7 hectares of lowered wetland and once flooded in the winter this provided habitat for a good selection of waders and wildfowl. We aim to create at least this amount again this summer. To create the lagoons the contractors on site are lowering field surface to create the flooded area and the soil removed is used to create a low bank around the new habitat. This phase of the project is being kindly funded by Viridor Credits and Essex and Suffolk water. We hope after this summers’ construction one more phase will be required in 2023 to get the project near to completion.

At the same time, we are building a new access for all ramp into the viewing platform at Hollesley. This will allow anyone to view the wetland habitats and all the spectacle it provides. The viewing platform, carpark and café provides a great destination for a short walk to enjoy the remote beauty of the lower Alde-Ore Estuary. This project is kindly funded by the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The project is being led by our crew of local practical volunteers. This part of the viewing platform will be created using recycled plastic timber to ensure it will be usable for very long time.
