Reserve News & Events

November and early December has been a busy time on the reserve. Late November saw the closure of Singleton Hide for 3 days as contractors with an amphibious machine, called a Truxor, went out into the lagoon to cut the reeds and re-define the viewing channels. They also cut the reeds over one of the islands and expanded the views around the edges. Whilst this was happening the warden team were coppicing the trees around the hide entrance and using the materials to replace the screen to the left of the hide – minimising disturbance on the lagoon. That’s not the reason why they have coppiced the trees though. Coppicing is a pruning technique which promotes re-growth.

The team have also been busy coppicing around the toilet block, again to promote new growth into the future. That’s not the only reason, we regularly assess tree safety and their health. Some of the trees behind the toilets were encroaching on the building and were in very poor health or dead.

Of course this is the best time of year to complete these jobs. They will bring advantages into the future for wildlife and for people.
