Now I don't want you to think I don't have anything better to do than chase giant puffins.  I really do (honest, Boss.)

However, the question marks surrounding the latest addition to the Bempton team has had a few folk doing a bit of digging.    And one of our southern based colleagues has managed to shed some light on of our very own Big Bird's beginnings.

The words 'giant puffin' rang a bell with Colin Higgins from our South West Regional Office.  He remembered receiving an email yonks ago that explained how the massive being came to be.

It would seem that the company that originally made the inflatable for the RSPB got the dimensions wrong (mistakes don't come much bigger) and were left with an over-sized puffin on their hands.

Unsurprisingly, no-one else had a requirement for a mega puffin and it's not really the sort of thing that you can flog at a car boot sale.  So they offered it to us for a knock-down price and hence, it was welcomed into the RSPB fold.

What happened to it after that is still a mystery.

Was it an understudy for the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters 3?  Was it  considered as a replacement for the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury?    If you can fill in any further blanks let us know.
