Falling out of the sky

With few confirmed reports of the brown flycatcher in the past couple of hours we were starting to calm down a bit. Then came the news that a red-breasted flycatcher had been sighted in one of the fields near the visitor centre. Bempton Cliffs always seems to have something interesting up it's sleeve, whether it be puffins in summer or pink footed geese flocks in autumn. As a coastal reserve we sometimes find that when the winds blow the right way our numbers come up in the bird lottery, especially in autumn when many birds are migrating.

With the winds still strong and rain forecast overnight we may find that some other little gems decide to rest their weary wings on our reserve. We'll keep you updated via the Bempton Cliffs facebook page if anything else unusual turns up. If, however, you decide to come along to the reserve for a little look at these small flycatchers please remember how you feel after a long and difficult flight and give them a bit of breathing room.
