At this time of year you should expect the unexpected at Bempton Cliffs! At the back of the visitor centre in the bushes near the newly located feeding station, a very showy vagrant in the form of a Siberian Chiffchaff! This bird could easily be mistaken as a Common Chiffchaff, unless of course you study it carefully. The Siberian Chiffchaffs call is different to that of the Common Chiffchaff, the former is more "piping" rather the latter's "hweet". Plumage wise, the Siberian has a buff supercilium (no yellow), buff face, breast sides and flanks and the head and nape is light grey/brown with no trace of green. However, the wing, rump and tail can be greenish. In all, a much paler grey/brown bird. The bird calls regularly which is one of the main identification factors!
