Staple Newk
Happy New Year!
With Christmas celebrations over and on New Years Day, what better way to blow off the cobwebs and fight the extra pounds than a brisk walk on the magnificent Bempton Cliffs? There was certainly a challenging blow today, doing its best to "take my breath away" and on occasions, attempting (and nearly succeeding!) to "blow the man down", and I'm no lightweight!!
At this time of the year, we reflect on the year past and for Bempton Cliffs it was certainly stunning and we look forward to the spring and the breeding birds returning to the cliffs. I'm sure that 2017 will be even better and our new viewpoint overlooking Staple Newk will be open soon, giving stunning views over the rock and Gannets.
Stunning views of and from the cliffs bring joy to the heart!

Flamborough Headland from Grandstand Viewpoint
Bird wise, I think many were taking shelter from the blow but Fulmar numbers were c50+; Gannets c30+ including at least 4 immatures; a male Stonechat did its best to stay on the top of vegetation; the sea held Shag, Cormorant and a rapid fly past drake Eider. It was nice to see a Weasel on the grass slopes near Grandstand viewpoint.
This Song Thrush flew in from the sea, no doubt needing to rest and feed
Looking out to sea, Gannets are increasing in numbers and will soon return to the cliff ledges!
What will you see? The RSPB staff would love to hear of your experiences in the cosy visitor centre where the Server is open and grab some bargains in the well stocked shop.
