New seasons bring new wildlife delights at Baron's Haugh. Many of our winter visitors have now arrived. As the water levels in the wetlands rise after the autumn wader migration season, wildfowl that have spent the summer in the far north are starting to arrive. Compared to Greenland or Iceland, Baron's Haugh is a cosy retreat. Noisy whooper swans are always entertaining to watch. We have had great numbers already, with almost a hundred counted on the reserve. Not so great if you are one of our mute swans however, who always seem to be a in a bit of a huff with the arrival of their yellow billed cousins at this time of year.
There are also hundreds of brightly coloured ducks on the water - including goldeneyes, shovelers, wigeons and teals. So all round, there is plenty to see! If you would like to learn more about these winter visitors and their migration to Scotland, there is a guided walk titled "Winter Arrivals" on Saturday 8 November, 10.30am - 12.30am. There are a few places left, so if you are interested, please contact Stephen Owen, the reserve warden on 07872 814911.
