"Volunteering at RSPB Arne - One Perspective" with Bob Skinner

We hear from volunteer Bob Skinner about his experience volunteering at RSPB Arne and why he keeps coming back.

Why do I volunteer? It’s not been a dramatic shift, something to do after retirement, but a continuation of all the things that I was taught were important in life – “try to leave the world in a better state than when you found it”. Probably a better question would be, why do I volunteer here?

It’s not the birds and birding, although that probably sounds close to blasphemy to some of my colleagues. It’s more about the opportunity to feel totally encased in the beauty of nature, even when involved in clearing blocked gutters or a flooded water meter chamber. As a species we have not treated the world kindly and this provides me with a chance to make a small contribution to setting things right with nature, plus engaging with the wider community who may not be aware why it is so important.

Like many I spent too many years focused on climbing the slippery pole of organisational success, which took a heavy mental toll. The last five years have been a revelation, I am healthier, more content and, although still a bit of a “loner” by nature, easier in relationships. Working in and with nature gets the “thumbs up” from me.
