Christina Mittar writes: Despite only several weeks remaining, our final months have been full of activity. We have shared some great events with other organisations, and of course made plenty of dams despite Storm Eunice putting the brakes on briefly!
Winter Fayre
The fayre took place January 29th at West Blean and Thornden Woods; where RSPB partnered with KWT and Wildwood to celebrate Blean Woods with the local community. Our team members supported event participants to create a miniature bison constructed from fresh coppice, as well as learning the craft of willow weaving. Our volunteers also ran two dam building sessions where we managed to build an amazing 7 dams. It was fantastic to see whole family groups getting involved with the task; all starting the session squeaky clean and leaving covered in mud with grins on faces!
Prince’s Trust
A 5-day ‘Get into Conservation’ course for young people was delivered in collaboration with Prince’s trust, RSPB and KWT. The participants engaged with staff to learn a variety of habitat and management techniques, as well as trying their hand at practical elements such as scrub clearance, dead hedge laying, species identification, pond dipping and dam building. Members of the group were even treated to s’mores over a bonfire midweek after building an awesome dead hedge! We thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiasm and company of all participants, and wish them all the luck for their future careers.
We’re famous!
We had a busy day at the beginning of March where our dam builders teamed up with the RSPB reserve volunteers, as well as University students, for a final day of dam-building. This attracted the attention of ITV Meridian and BBC Radio Kent, where we could showcase the project and dams. A big shout out to Josh who very kindly, and bravely, offered to do an interview with ITV! We were featured on the evening news that same day, and Bradley even did a fabulous live interview on BBC Radio Kent!
