This week's photo was picked by our brilliant volunteer Ben Hide.

Think of Swan Lake and you probably conjure up images of graceful movement and serene calmness. However, sometimes reality can tell a different story, as is the case in this week’s Photo of the Week.

Sent to us by RSPB member Robin Kirwan-Taylor, this pair of mute swans are causing quite the commotion. Possibly a pair having a “marital disagreement” or maybe warring rivals of the same sex, either way the image really captures the power and aggression these creatures possess. The spray of the water and rippled reflections help bring the image further to life, the energy and movement of the swans clearly apparent, even in a still photograph.

And finally, whilst the old adage that ‘a swan’s wing can break your arm’ might not necessarily be accurate, you can certainly see why it may have been thought up in the first place – that’s quite some wingspan! Think I’ll just leave them to it…
