This week our brilliant volunteer Ben Hide chose his pick of the week and tells us why.

Now I understand spiders aren’t for everyone and arachnophobia is a very real affliction, but look a little closer and they are fascinating little creatures.

Whatever your stance on spiders, there’s no denying that their ability to make webs is one of the most delicately beautiful and skilled processes in nature. In fact I spent a good five or 10 minutes the other day watching a small spider make a web on my kitchen window, far more interesting than a lot of stuff on TV these days anyway!

And so I picked out this submission as Photo of the Week - what looks to be a garden spider (or possibly a walnut orb-weaver, it’s hard to tell) situated on top of its dew-covered web. I just love the way the water droplets catch the light, each iridescent sphere clinging to the strong yet delicate silken web as its creator waits patiently…

Thanks go to Tonia Chetwood for sending us this stunning photo of a spider and its woven web.
