Superb replies David. One can but hope that these will be used properly by the Daily Mail on Sunday. Maybe the cynic in me thinks this might not be the case but one can but hope and rest easy in the knowledge that the RSPB will continue its fabulous work no matter what the shooting industry throw at them. All the very best to you all and thanks.

From the way he talks you would think that something natural was causing the hen harrier decline - how on earth can any species have their numbers recover when a determined number of people are waiting to blast them out of the sky? It really is high time this 'industry' was sorted out - from the outside, as it seems obvious that it will never happen from within.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Very well said Martin. I trust Defra will also receive the right story on this, namely that it is not the RSPB that is reasponsible for leaking the contents of a confedential meeting. However I think as a consequence of this you are quite right to clearly repeat the RSPB's position which I support 101%.
As you say, I would fully expect the attacks on and missrepresentations of, the RSPB to continue as clearly there are quite a number of totally unscrupulous people around.
I think, as you say Martin, that it does no harm to keep frequently repeating that the shooting industry must OBEY THE LAW that is "the bottom line" and that must be recognised by all parties including Defra. Further, that hen harrier numbers must be clearly on the road to recovery before anything else is considered. (After all, if I were to be caught on a speed camera it would cut no ice to say I was speeding because I was late for an important meeting. So why therefore should some feel as they may do in the shooting industry that they do not need to obey the law when it comes to killing birds of prey?)
While the sentence on the Norfolk game keeper seems to me farcically light, at least the judge's comments are welcome and need to be taken on board by the shooting industry.
Keep up the very good work RSPB this is going to be a long rough, tough road but with perspicacity, determination and perseverance the RSPB will win through in the end with this campaign because it is right.
