As we brace ourselves for some serious winter snow, winter tries to seduce us with some icy loveliness dressing the landscape at the RSPB’s The Lodge nature reserve.
It’s a vital time to stock up bird feeders and supply water to get your garden birds through the tough times – and if you haven’t pre-registered for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch – there’s still time.

Thanks cjbeady - for once I remembered my camera!
Hi Kaz - there are special holders for fat balls, we do sell them and they are good to prevent waste and avoid the dreadful mesh, here's a link shopping.rspb.org.uk/.../bird-food.html
Hi we have a robin in our garden, we also have bluetits ,great tits sparrows blackbird
The problem is every time the robin comes to feed at the bird table , all the other birds scare the robin away .
We are worried the robin is not getting any food we actually saw the robin eating off one of the fat balls
Also why are the fat balls always in mesh ? What can we put them in to be sure the are safe for the birds to eat ?
Kaz
What a super photo - worthy of a Christmas card. But it is pretty desparate out there - I had no less than 13 Blackbirds in my garden at first light today.
