One of the stars of the launch of the RSPB Centre for Conservation Science this week was a gannet which we, and the University of Exeter, had attached a camera to in Pembrokeshire last year to produce footage which was shown on a big screen at the event.

This bird was also carrying a GPS tag, and Dr David Gibbons, the head of the new centre, noted in his speech, this kind of new technology is revolutionising the way we do conservation research. Dr Guy Anderson, the Centre for Conservation Science's research manager, expanded upon this exciting area of work in a guest blog for the Guardian earlier this week.
