News, last week, that Highland Council had voted 12 to 3 to reject a proposal by SSE to construct a windfarm at Strathy South against the recommendations of their own officers was a massive victory for nature and for common sense. The peatlands of the Flows are a stunning and globally recognised landscape of unparalleled importance for wildlife.
We’ve been fighting to save them and to restore the habitat for decades with some heartening results – the proposal to plonk a windfarm in the middle of this special place was and is, as our conservation officer Kenny Graham puts it ‘simply bonkers’.
Here’s the full story with pictures and everything.
Thank fully the Highlands Council agreed – but the campaign is not over, Strathy South has another stage to go and other proposals add to our concerns. But this has been a huge and positive step forward and a significant boost to our team to carry on fighting for nature’s home in this inspiring and remote landscape.
