I don’t know about you but I really try hard to remember to pick up my collection of miscellaneous shopping bags, a kaleidoscope of corporate colours of various vintages. But too often I forget them, at least if the car is outside there is still time for a mad dash to collect the shopping starts to pile up.

For those smaller, on foot forgetful shops there’s always the cheery ‘oh I don’t need a bag, thanks’ before tottering away trying to stuff shopping in pockets.

My last resort is to accept one of those flimsy bags that fail on all counts bad for the environment, flag of forgetfulness, and not much of bag either.  Their description as ‘single-use’ is something of a challenge to me and some become old friends – but generally their days should be numbered.

So well done the Welsh Assembly Government – adding further incentive in the form of 5p charge is pressure in the right direction.

And even better, the money raised as single-use bag use drops away (and let's remember reducing the useof flimsy, single-use bags is the welcome aim) will be available to good causes.

Here at the RSPB, we are delighted that TESCO are supporting our work to protect some of the most special places for wildlife in Wales. Moorland, coasts and woods will benefit from the funds, landscapes that are home to special wildlife such as these puffins

The RSPB reserves at South Stack on Anglesey and the Newport Wetlands aren’t just great for wildlife but are amongst the best places for enjoying the nature of Wales.
