The Spoon-billed sandpiper is one of the World’s most charismatic birds, but also one of the rarest and most threatened. It breeds up in North-East Russia and migrates along the East Asia coast where many of its feeding and roosting sites have been lost. Most of the birds spend the winter on the coastal mudflats of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
I have witten previously on how young people have been learning about this wonderful bird and communicating about the need for its conservation.
The latest part of the story of young people communicating about Spoony is in this short animated film. The film tells the story of Spoony’s migration and features some of the threats to its survival. But it also offers hope. 500 young people in 8 countries along the Spoon-billed sandpiper migration flyway coloured in the individual frames. The film was produced by Vivian Fu from the Hong Kong Birdwatching Society, with support from various BirdLife Partners and her sister Lilian. The film is around five minutes long and I think you will like it.
If you like the film, please tweet, blog, etc about it. We need more people to understand the story and need for survival for this magnificent bird.
