Here I am at the Natural History Museum located glamorously behind the cloakroom awaiting the start of the launch event of State of Nature. Speakers are rehearsing their lines and we are all looking forward to the arrival of Sir David Attenborough.

Twenty five organisations have come together to produce State of Nature – an unprecedented collaboration of scientists and experts from across the voluntary conservation movement. Today the media has been filled with live interviews, packages from around the country and comment with spokespeople drawn from a wide range of partner organisations.

The sobering assessment of the depths of the trouble nature is in is only part of the story – the array of talents gathered at the NHM this evening is a real springboard.

We know conservation works – there are many battles won and challenges met. The trouble is the scale of the crisis is growing – only through the combined and align efforts of the voluntary conservation movement (and yes we know we need to do more), Governments and wider society (yes that’s you and me, and businesses and farmers and landowners) can we hope to stop the losses and build on our successes.
