I need to volunteer more to help make me more healthy and get rid of my cold! Or at least help stop them from happening. Waking up this morning with a cold and full head with two small children who have just come through it (thanks kids!) I am reminded of something my manager said last month about volunteering for health.
A report commissioned by the RSPB stressed that moderate exercise, including walking and nature conservation activities helped to prevent heart disease, strokes, depression and sleep problems. I also know that Volunteering England commissioned the University of Wales to undertake a review of published research where they asked researchers to assess the health effects of volunteering both on individual volunteers and on health. Their findings showed that volunteering had a positive effect on volunteers’ health and impacted on their ability to carry out activities associated with daily living, ability to cope with their own ill-health and amazingly their longevity!
I’m starting to think that although Volunteering might not cure my cold, becoming a nature trails volunteer or, wildlife explorers main leader (well we are talking about our younger members this month and I can always get my own two involved!) it will certainly get me out the house and help keep me fitter.
