A closer look at just one of the many volunteering opportunities available via IFLI and the RSPB
Fidra work parties are aimed at removing the invasive plant tree mallow from the island. We do this because it grows so tall it prevents nesting puffins accessing their burrows. Over the last 10 years thousands of man hours have been spent clearing the tee mallow and thanks to that we have seen a large increase in the number of occupied burrows. Due to the nature of the island, work parties are often cancelled at the last minute.
Euan Ramage - Volunteer - ‘Fidra is a magical place, I always leave in a good mood and can’t wait for the next mallow bashing session’
Allison Leonard, Forth Reserves Warden – ‘Without volunteers giving up their time to help us clear the tree mallow from Fidra each year, we wouldn’t have the thriving seabird colony that we do. I’m always amazed how generous people are with their time but when I’m watching a puffin come and go from it’s burrow on Fidra, I’m so glad they are.’
