John Wightman – what a star!  John volunteers at Lakenheath reserve in Eastern England.  A very special reserve, Lakenheath was once carrot fields but is now teeming with wildlife due to the creation of reedbeds, grazing marshes and other habitats.  It’s a fantastic place to see cranes, golden orioles, barn owls and kingfishers, to name just a few, and a fantastic place to volunteer!  It is also has its own train station!

Our new visitors centre looks out over a pond so wildlife can be seen up close, and the visitors centre is also where you will often find John!  To date John has made 106 RSPB members this financial year, amazing!  It is thanks to John’s passion for the site and for the RSPB, coupled with his determination, that results in his success in recruiting members, vital for our conservation work.  Not only does John do this on and off site but he also helps in a plethora of other ways at Lakenheath. For example, keeping the notice boards up to date, welcoming and providing information to visitors, helping staff with admin and deliveries, and also helping out with the work parties on the reserve.  Absolutely invaluable, thank you John!
