Now we’re stepping up for nature as a family! Eleanor and I have just registered to take part in WildSquare, my idea of micro volunteering for kids.
As a busy mum, working full time – in fact I have two jobs, I rarely get to spend quality time with my daughter. She is passionate about my work, is so proud that her mum works for the RSPB and with volunteers, it seemed like a perfect way to get her involved and for us to do stuff together.
We’ve chosen the area around where we live so we can take part on our way to the school bus or just spending the time together at the weekend taking a walk around the village – great exercise, quality time together and making a contribution to the RSPB.
I hope that I am providing her with inspiration to become one of our conservation volunteers of the future. Earlier this year Eleanor visited Paxton Pits with her school, her account is below. By involving her in the WildSquare surveys, I can increase her curiosity by looking closely at plants, animals and bugs (she loves the phrase mini-beasts). It will also raise her awareness and knowledge about wildlife habitats, seasonal change and how wonderful and amazing nature is.
Habitats through time By Eleanor Crawley aged 9
On Tuesday 14th we went to Paxton Pits for the day.
We went pond dipping and we saw some water boat men. It looked like someone was rowing a boat. We saw some water snails they were cool I saw some frog spawn it looked slimy I saw a fish too. When we went bird watching we saw some ducks they were playing in the water, we saw some blue and grey tits as well. Then we went looking for fossils we saw a devils toe nail and it looked like a toenail it was funny looking, we saw a bone too. When we went looking for bugs I saw some really big spider it was really hairy. Then we went to look for bugs again we used a sweep net it was really big we caught some grass hoppers and we caught a toad it was really small. I really enjoyed the day and would go there again.
No matter what you think you are, you are always and in all ways so much more!
