After my excursion to Norwich and mountain biking in Suffolk at the weekend I was back at Old Hall surveying, raking and brushcutting.

Monday was a long day as we were having problems with a cow that couldn’t comprehend she was feeding twins not just a single calf. The poor twins had to endure the odd kick or two before she eventually got the hang of it.

A rather perplexed mum with her twins

The next day Suzanne and I were down at Pennyhole Bottom to do some Benthic sampling. The aim was to identify what food sources are available by taking twenty core samples across a predefined area of soft mud. The samples were labelled, bagged up and transported back to the reserve to be sieved and analysed.

My core sampling skills are a bit rusty and no funny comments please……

No that isn’t red liquorice, it is a rather impressive chironomid. A favourite food of avocets and other waders.
