Every month in our Campaign’s Update we recommend a book of the month. In October we turned the tables and asked our readers for their recommendations. We were thrilled with what people came up with! We had so many people getting in touch that we couldn’t include them all, so find a selection of the most popular suggestions below:

A bright blue book cover with large text saying "This Changes Everything".This Changes Everything: Naomi Klein

Recommended by Sophie:

Sophie says: “I’m currently reading ‘This Changes Everything’ by Naomi Klein, and am learning so much about the economic ideologies which underpin the ongoing attack on our shared world. It’s a brilliant book, so that would be my vote!!”

A cream book cover with chestnut-coloured hares running across it along with the words "The Running Hare".The Running Hare: John Lewis-Stempel

Recommended by Julie:

Julie says: “It is beautifully written and highlights the difference between intensive farming and farming with nature and the environment in mind. “

A bright orange book cover with the outline of a pelican on the front and the word "Rebirding" above it in green.Rebirding: Benedict Macdonald

Recommended by Juliet, Peter and Steven

Juliet says: “It is detailed and carefully researched. It explains what we have lost in shocking detail but what I love is that it shows why conservation makes sound economic sense.”

Steven says: “It is such an inspirational and educational book. Every member of the government should read this book.”

Peter says: “The fist part of this book I find very depressing, reading about how mankind has been decimating wildlife, by any means possible, on a huge scale since, it seems, for ever. The book continues in a more optimistic tone however, giving a glimmer of hope for our future but reinforcing the urgent need for action.“

A blue and green book cover showing rolling hillsides and the sky above with the words "On Gallows Down".On Gallows Down: Nicola Chester

Recommended by Alan and Peter

Alan says: “that charts her life in rural Wessex, and how her younger years in which she was involved in the protest campaigns against the Newbury bypass, and the siting of nuclear missiles on Greenham Common, transitioned into a despair in environmental deterioration, and a deep desire for her and her family to live and grow in a healthier natural world. Her's is a story of a working woman developing a voice to oppose the environmental degradation wrought by her farming neighbours, her landlords, and others that threaten the security of the local wildlife. It is a lyrical description of her passion for nature.”

A pale book cover with wild flowers running across the top above the words "The Stubborn Light Of Things".The Stubborn Light of Things: Melissa Harrison

Recommended by Pam

Pam says: “It inspired me to think about nature in a different way. Melissa said that she had learned to identify birds and their song and that she had spent a lot of her life thinking that that was for other people to know and not her. But why not? I had felt the same so after reading the book, I started to pay more attention to bird call and have tried to learn. I am not very good at it yet but better than I was! Lots of other inspiring anecdotes in it and a beautiful book to look at too as the cover is so pretty (when you take the paper sleeve off). Highly recommend!”
