Last Saturday (24th August) we visited the RSPB Ramsey Island reserve with the children and staff from the Rhydyfelin section of the charity Valleys Kids.

The weather held out and despite some windy conditions early on we made the boat trip across to the Island .

Apart from giving everyone a great day out the aim was to raise awareness of the importance of the marine environment from an environmental, educational and local employment aspect.

We've been working on a project for later this year that helps highlight how the marine reserve fits into the local community. From providing job opportunities to recreation for both locals and visitors to the area, we hope  to show how a well managed marine protected area adds value beyond just a home for wildlife. As Ramsey shows it can become an integral part of a community enhancing the local biodiversity and the economy.

The Children from valley Kids live in Rhydyfelin, which is near to Ponytpridd. A trip to Ramsey island is a journey of several hours, and most had never been before. Together we saw some amazing sights from seal pups (just a few days old!)

A great day was had by all, and seeing the island from the children’s perspective made it all the more special.  The finished "project" will be ready in November and we'll share it with you all then.

In the meantime if you want to keep up to date with what’s happening on Ramsey Island why not follow the blog?
