Did you see the Guardian or the Mail this morning?
Welsh environment minister John Griffiths has today called for Mr Cameron to stop dragging his feet and introduce a plastic bag levy in England.
In July, supermarkets in Wales reported reductions of up to 96% in single-use plastic and paper bags since the charge was introduced October 2011. This is against a background of overall increases in use across the UK for the second year running.
The Guardian reports that 75% of English adults support a 5p charge in England, and the Mail reports that 70% of the population in Wales support the charge that has been introduced there.
So what does that add up to?
1) A simple step that is incontrovertibly proven to reduce plastic bag use – reducing litter, saving resources, and helping to save wildlife
2) A simple step that is widely supported
3) A simple step that has been/is being adopted everywhere in the UK except England
I simply don’t understand why Mr Cameron is digging his heels in over this. It’s a no brainer.
