Have you ever had a problem so big that you couldn’t solve it by yourself and it takes a team effort to get the job done? A tricky homework question that it takes the entire family to help solve, trying to catch your pet once they’ve realised that they’re about to take a trip to the vet, getting the kids up, dressed, fed and out the door on time. Well that’s how we feel about deforestation.
Deforestation is a huge problem. Rainforests once covered more than 12% of the Earth’s land surface – now they are reduced to around 6%. Every four seconds an area of rainforest the size of a football pitch is lost - cut down with chainsaws and burned for commercial gain.
We know this isn’t a problem we can solve on our own. We need businesses, governments, other charities and people like you to pull together and step up for rainforests before it’s too late and Tesco agrees. That’s why we’re launching our new partnership, Together For Trees.
Together For Trees will see Tesco stepping up for rainforests by providing funding for some of our work to protect and restore threatened rainforests in seven countries with an area totalling almost twice the size of Greater London. Not only that, they’ll be working with us to make sure they’re part of the solution, not part of the problem. We’ll be working closely with Tesco to help it make its supply chains more sustainable and to help it further reduce its impact on the environment.
And you can do your bit too. If you’re a Tesco customer, you can donate your green Clubcard points, donate your Clubcard vouchers, buy and reuse any of the Together For Trees branded reusable bags* and donate directly to the RSPB, all as part of Together For Trees. We’re aiming to raise £1 million in the first year of the partnership and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date with how we’re getting on.
*P.S. Unfortunately, if you live in Wales you no longer receive green Clubcard points for reusing bags because of the Welsh bag levy. However, there’s plenty of other things you can do to gain green Clubcard points. To find out more, click here.
