shops sold out

Hi everyone,

just been to the shops to find them selling out of bird food and feeders, its great to see people feeding the birds,

has anybody else seen this in the shops were they live?

john.

  • Hi Waxwing, I also think it's great but I worry about my birds if I can't get stocks in as I am as regular as clockwork. They sit & wait ready for me  in the morning. I order some online but it took longer than normal the other week due to the snow.

I've just looked on my usual website for bulk 20kg of suet pellets & they are sold out of quite a few things including these. Will the suppliers be running out of stock due to farms not being able to supply.

  • Hi Waxwing

I'm lucky I stocked up well before the big freeze so I don't know what's happening in the stores or garden centres. However, there was a piece on BBC's Radio 4 Breakfast programme this morning about the plight of birds and how important it is to provide food and water in our gardens so maybe the message is getting through.

    Hi Waxwing

My small shops close to where I live have bird food, and they are a safe bet each and every time.

So I would suggest supporting your local shops

The supermarkets tend to let the bird food supply dry up,  and then they decided to restock.

    On one my other non-bird Forums Gardening Forums I have left a short message about feeding birds.  One bird lover have gone one step further and provided an RSPB message about feeding birds fro all to read {bless them}

Great to find other bird lovers in other unexpected places.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

I am still the only household in our little group of 6 putting food out though, I really wish my neighburs would also put food out. I would be happy that all of the birds get to have a chance to feed then.

  • Our local radio has done several pieces about the importance of feeding birds at the moment, and I think the message is getting through to people. I was at the garden centre the other day, in the snow and ice, expecting to be the only customer as no-one is buying plants at the moment. I was amazed at the number of cars in the car park, and the shop was full of people stocking up on bird food and feeders. It was quite heart warming to see them all, exept they had run out of dried meal worms, which they don't tend to sell in supermarkets. I did get some though from the pet shop. I'm putting together a big list for a bulk order on-line as buying locally is far too expensive at the moment with all the suet and mealworms they are devouring. I have always bought from local shops before, but I am spending more on bird food than dog food, and it is getting ridiculous.

    Cheers, Linda.

I haven't been able to get out much in the snow (house located in a tricky spot, very annoying!!) so I wouldn't know if the shops are selling out of bird food/feeders. I'm quite peeved to notice that not many people round here bother feeding the birds. Our next door neighbours (who only moved in a couple of months ago) put up a feeding station when they moved in, which cheered me somewhat, but they only filled the feeders up once. They occasionally scatter bread out on the top platform but this has all been well and truly covered in snow for the past however long it's been. They are clearly only fair-weather feeders :/

I've been making do with stuff in my cupboards for bird food, they are eating things which would normally go untouched, they must be desperate.

  • Hi AnnaBanana,

Sorry you cannot get to the shops, its a pity someone is not offering to help.As for people feeding at this time ,will the same people still feed in the spring/summer?

  • my local shop has put fat balls right at the front of the shop, and a friend who works there said that every other person was buying them. I would also like t think i did my bit by handing out homemade fatballs at a volunteer event in Cardiff  we got through nearly 200! As well as the apple feeders we got the children to make... Hopefully theres enough food out there!
