Bill Bailey’s Birdwatching Bonanza On Sky 7th January 2010.

I'm sure many of you already know about this show, but as I could not find any postings about it, (Only info was on podcast) I'm posting the info on here.

The following from Bill Baileys website.

Bill has been twitching, playing host to two celebrity teams in a series of tough, competitive bird watching challenges in Sky1 HD’s brand new six-part series, Bill Bailey’s Birdwatching Bonanza starting on

Thursday 7th January at 9pm on Sky1 HD and Sky1.

I think the show is sort of a competition between 2 teams, and they visit lots of locations and RSPB nature reserves.

More info can be heard with a quick interview with Bill on the RSPB  December podcast.

My other half said it was rubbish & fell asleep.

What would be really good is a programme taking normal run of the mill people to birdwatch & see something amazing that they wish, like Jim'll Fix It Bird style.

E.g Dear Jim, please fix it for me to go and feed the Red Kites with Chris Packham (my idea of a hot date lol). That would be a fantastic programme!

If anyone is thinking of doing it my idea is copyrighted by the way! All money coming my way! No where else , ok! LOL

Think you may be up against Mrs Dipper there.

Met Chris at the Bird Fair last year whilst Mrs Dipper was elswhere at the show, had a discussion about music (mainly The Smiths) and managed to get her a signed photo though.

    Couldn't agree more!

I gather there a different celebs each week - one week its Kim "my love" Woodburn, I found her too false and irritating on I'm a Celebrity so will have to give that one a miss!

I can sort of see Bill Bailey's point to the show in the sense that its a celebrity-oriented society we live in at the moment -  you stick a boring nobody in something and everyone watches it.  But its not always needed, from wha I have seen and heard lots of people like Bill Bailey so I'm pretty sure he didn't need a bunch of so-called celebrities that no one knows to help get people watching.

I couldn't believe the quiz thing that the answer was Goldcrest - and two of those people called themselves birders!

Yeah, the goldcrest bit was a screaming at the TV moment!

Joe pasquarli-however you spell it - is on the next one, he irritates me so I'll probably be giving it a miss.

Oh Norfolk Dipper you are the perfect Hubby! Take Note Birdman if you are reading. Was he a lovely man? I always think he is down to earth & not at all big headed with fame.

  • I totally agree Dipper, I thought so much more could have been made of it. Having said that I will watch it again because there is always something new to learn and the Solway Firth looked good.

    Keep Norfolk for birds

  • Over on Twitter, Bird watching mag had a bit of a poll going asking people what their thoughts on the show were.  Most people were in favour, but the general opinion was it would have been much better without the celebrities.

  • I would def concur with that, I think its  Norfolk tomorrow, is that right?

    Hi,

I don't have sky so I missed the programme. The reviews I've read don't seem too impressed so far.

I wonder if using genuine birders on the teams might have been a better idea-  we can make our own Birding celebs:)

There used to be good natural hist quizzes on radio 4 - and the 'Big Bird Race' filmed in 1982 showed you could film birders out and about.   Filming any birds seen in situ on a given day is always going to be difficult and non birders arent going to be impressed with say ... footage of lapland buntings over flying as the team bins them :(

    Any other thoughts guys?

  • Well I was more impressed with last night's episode than the previous week.  That might have had something to do with me favouring the celebrities more than last time though (I find Joe Swash endlessly irritating), even though they were still mucking about to a certain extent they seemed to be more interested (even though Sherrie didn't know a Hedge Sparrow and a Dunnock were technically the same thing, but we'll let her off).

The footage of all those waders taking off was amazing just on tv, so I cannot begin to imagine what it must have been like in person!  Sherrie was <almost> speechless and commented on it being a wonder of the wold or something along those lines.  Maybe seeing things like that and experiencing what they did they've brought back more of an interest in birds and nature.  We can but hope!

Personally I found the Bird of Prey part interesting and I wish they'd have spent that little bit more time on it, or at least got a few more images of the birds.  Especially the Sparrowhawk and Buzzard, I don't recall seeing them up close and personal.

This episode was a bit better but I'm still not struck on the concept as I don't really think the celebrities should be bumbling about when they don't know what they're doing, they just seem to spook the birds and they all take off!

  • Can you get this programme via the internet? We don't have sky :( Or any TV :(
