Fox hunting

Hi all,

Im sitting here watching Countryfile at the moment and I am appalled at the possibility that fox hunting could become legal again.  I'm so strongly against this.  How can there be people out there who find that running an animal down and letting dogs wrip it to pieces be an acceptable code of practice or a few hours of pleasure?  Any one else have thoughts about this?  I'm aware of all the reasons why people would feel that foxes are a concern regarding wildlife stock and the risk of rabies but principally as an animal lover whatever it may be, I can't see how this resolves the situation.

  • Forgetting whether we like it or not, its very wrong of them to be talking about it again from a democratic point of view. It was a free vote in our elected parliament, it was one of the initial policies that a previous government talked about in their manifesto that was then subsequently voted in by us. It should be done and finished with and not being made to waste parliamentry time that should be being spent discussing issues that we are now facing. The only reason they are still talking about it is because so many of the very rich and powerful Countryside Alliance (Farmer's Union) have so much sway and influence within the Tory party.

    Having said all that, I agree with you Kezmo, its barbaric and an alien way of thinking to me. No matter what their propaganda says, from a scientific point of view the brutal killing of foxes serves no purpose and general good to the community, they do it just because it brings them pleasure.

    Foxes are a real problem in Australia, where they have been introduced by us (along with domestic cats) and there they are actually causing extinctions of whole species. So if someone wants to go and fill their bloodlust with the death of a fox, the least they could do is pop down under, where there is some legitimacy to the claim of it benefitting others...

  • I'm against it's return.  It would be like bringing back cock-fighting or bear baiting.  It serves no purpose when it comes to controlling foxes and is simply for the enjoyment of a few that for whatever reason find animals being ripped to pieces by a pack of dogs fun.

    So am I!! Anyone (party) that says they are willing to bring it back will NOT get my vote!!!

  • Hear Hear! Maybe we should start one of those online petition things? Anyone know how to do that?

  • I saw the Countryfile programme, too, and nearly fell out of my seat when I heard people being interviewed saying that they were just waiting for the law to be changed back again.  Now it seems to me I've been naive thinking that with the laws having been changed to against this awful practice, that would be an end to the matter, but apparently these people have just been biding their time, waiting for a change of Government, & hoping it will automatically be changed back again!  If pushed, I would say that really we can't criticise the Spanish for still allowing bullfighting as a cruel sport, if we ourselves still condone foxhunting. (I wouldn't mind so much if they shot the animals in a humane way, but chasing and tearing something to pieces is not exactly civilised behaviour)

    Afraid not, but I'd be the first to sign it!

    You can start a petition at the Number 10 website, not sure how easy it is to do but it does go straight to the government.

  • Totally against foxhunting. I cant believe Countryfile were actually discussing it. Anyone thinking of voting Tory at the next election should take note.

    I am totally against it too.  Any type of animal harassment is a no go to me and I will not be voting this year once more if this rule about Foxes is overturned.  It is a disgrace.

    To me there is so much in the way of animal sport sport, and all of it should be stopped right now. {frown}  The BoP's are the favourite quarry to shot and poison. {unhappy face}

    The law is there and it should not be broken by anyone.  What is it a 6 month ban and £5,000 fine, then yes it should stick to any 'law breaking' person.  The people who think they have a right to break the rules (if there is some force from the goverment parties) are no better than anyone else

    Just because some people are lucky to be privileged does not mean they have any rights to kill any animal at all.  It is all money and status and that is all it is - and no feeling or respect towards animals at all.

    Regards

    Fox hunting still continues (legally) it’s just the rules which have changed.

    Build it and they will come.
