Aurora Borealis

As I’ve always wanted to see the northern lights, I subscribed some time ago to Aurora Watch UK. More or less forgot about it as haven’t received an e-mail alert for ages, but got one today!

Activity has been detected (see here: http://www.dcs.lancs.ac.uk/iono/aurorawatch/rt_activity/)

Worth keeping an eye on the night sky as you never know! Especially those of you further north!!

Please let us know if anything is spotted!!!

  • Thanks for that MarJus (although my firefox browser doesn't seem to like the site - I'll have to use IE (argh!)). Was lucky enough to see the Aurora once probably about 20 years ago when activity was seen as far south as our back garden! Not the full works, but still magical. Will keep my eyes open...

  • Apparently it was a false alarm.  I didn't know anything about Aurora Watch until it came through on Twitter earlier this evening. After eventually getting onto the website (overloaded probably) and signed up etc the news came through (again via Twitter) that it was a false alarm. I got excited too as it was an almost clear night up here! Ah well never mind. All signed up for alerts now so will watch and wait....

I'm lucky in that I've seen them a few times. My first time I had been asleep travelling home as a passenger (obviously!) from work when I lived out in the country. I woke up to see the sky rolling in waves. I thought there was something wrong with my eyes! Not much colour then, just rolling. I've since seen the most beautiful colours stretching out before me whilst stood on the back doorstep. It's been a long time since I've seen then...hence my excitement earlier tonight.

Make the most of today because, unlike Sky+, there isn't a rewind button.

  • Oh Paula, what a disappointment for you. But you are lucky to have seen them in the past - it's something I have never seen, but would love to.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Yes, sorry about that, got an e-mail to say it was a false alarm as well... :-(

  • Hi Marjus - was going to ask if anyone had experienced this the other night but not sure how to spell it!  Its on my list of ambitions.  In the spring and summer here we see the space station go over in the evening - a bright shiny silver orb in the sky - that's the nearest I've got to it so far.

  • Hi Lucy! Me too! Have always wanted to see it! Hopefully one day I'll get somewhere where it is more likely to happen! Not seen the ISS either actually! Did post some 'tracking' links for it in the sunsets & clouds thread!
