Tea, anyone?

Anyone for a cuppa? I see the tea room is now open!

I just Googled Plumbread and found a whole stack of recipes from Winteringham Village - I'm hungry now! I originate from the west country (halfway between Bath and Bristol) and my favourite was always Lardy Cake but they can't make it properly in the bakers round here. It's way too dry and insufficient sugar topping.

The above village is not that far from myself and Cartmandua, there are lots of variants on those recipies but as Cartmandua said go for the cakey type they are not as dry

  • You swines, some of us are trying to lose weight! And here you all are talking about delicious cakes. Its bad enough at Top Lodge when the smell of the bacon butties and pastries wafts in from the cafe next door. Now I get it here too.

    (just kidding)

Reedbed, freshwater scrapes, saltmarsh and wet meadow. Frampton Marsh has it all! Come and pay us a visit soon.

  • Awww, poor Chris. Anyway, enough of the faux sympathy, Devon Cream Teas - that's something else I miss. Fresh melt-in-the-mouth scones, yummy jam and lashings of Devon clotted cream..... (wink)

  • How about some lemon meringue pie?  Or some cheesecake - any variety except chocolate, or pavlova with lots of passionfruit pulp drizzled over?

Lardy Cake?  Yummy.  Remember it really sticky, very fruity and really unhealthy when I grew up in the Thames Valley.  Used to get some when visiting the West Country as an adult, but the recipe seemed to get healthier (=less yummy) through the years!

Sure I already posted this!  I don't do puddings either.  But Lardy Cake when I was young (long, long ago) was best eaten straight from the baker's shop when Dad did the messages on Saturday morning.  Then all we needed for lunch was some home-made soup (was there any other kind of soup back then?

  • Afternoon tea is no longer a part of most people's busy schedule.  I guess there are youngsters growing up who never experience it.  A good afternoon tea is so civilised and civilising.  It is very polite, cannot be rushed and is an institution which should be brought back.

  • Absolutely! Especially with all the lovely foods mentioned on here. I also adore lemon meringue pie - and does anyone remember a fruit cake called "Grannie's Cake"? Used to have oodles of crunchy demerara sugar on top.
