Hi all, I thought it extremely important to share with you something I feel is a massive threat to wildlife and against everything the RSPB has sought to preserve.
While on a trip Hayle Estuary I watched a large digger creating holes on the banks to put anchor points for buoys. I asked the people there at the time and it was authorised by Hayle Harbour. These are the people who wanted to turn the Estuary into a marina and the RSPB bought the area to stop. I asked some locals and they have said they are trying to redevelop the whole area and have plans to put upwards up 20 boats down on those banks. I have been going there for years and the 5 or so boats that have been down there for years respect the area but putting 20 more down there hardly seems right for the wildlife and looks like a sneaky plan to get their marina anyway?
Please help anyone who has any information on this and I need this to come to light before it is too late!!!!!!
Hi Rosie
I think the only thing you can do is source out local news to see what is going on at Hayle at the moment
There is a e-mail address you can contact for further information
hayle.estuary@rspb.org.uk <hayle.estuary@rspb.org.uk>
I am sure that they will give you an update of what is happening
Others will know more than myself here.
Regards
Kathy and Dave

Kathy/Dave,
Thanks but I have spoken to the people in charge of the estuary for the RSPB and they seem quite happy for Hayle Harbour to be digging around there as it is just out of the SSSI area. I've looked into it with some locals and there is currently a dispute with Hayle Harbour as they don't actually own that land, the RSPB do. If this is the case why would they still be left to destroy these banks with a digger? That to me seems like the RSPB is ignoring this through fear of action from a large company?
I've looked into more plans and Hayle harbour plan on redeveloping the whole area, some of which I whole heartedly support. I don't support their plans for turning the quiet and wildlife filled banks just outside the SSSi into their marina they could not build before and just moving it further around the estuary. This will have almost the same effect through pollution and extra people there who do not respect the area regardless of how it is policed as the marina would have. It seems to me they are just bypassing planning laws through mismanagement of the area?
Please can more people either put me straight on exactly what is happening here or help me stop this happening as much further and the damage will already be done.
I did some enquiries for you, and received this reply from Dave Flumm, the RSPB Site Manager at Hayle Estuary.
"There have been a number of illegal moorings at this beach (Lelant beach) and Hayle Harbour Management Ltd were there with a minidigger recently to address these and also to replace some of the sinkers for the vessels that do use the beach there legitimately. This involved digging holes in the beach to reinstate about 11 old moorings. The holes were then infilled again. There are plans to increase the moorings to accommodate up to 20 vessels there but these will not be permitted to enter the main estuary where the birds feed and which is solely RSPB property. There seems to be some confusion here with the "marina". Through the forthcoming Hayle Harbour Development, there are plans to build a large marina in the harbour itself but this has nothing to do with Lelant Beach and in fact vessels at the new marina will not be permitted to enter the area mentioned above."
It is important that you pointed out your concerns as you should, and we are all aware of what the situation is. Yes we are worried as you are.
Trochilus has kindly explained the whole situation, and now we all know what is going on.
The RSPB has it all in control, so that it is good to know. to current situation. Moored boats are an issue (as a sailng person myself) and there are rules. People have stick by them when it comes to mooring and wildlife simple as that.
Hope all is answered now

Hi Kathy/Dave,
Some questions answered now thanks. More an intrigue now than anything. After speaking to people down at Lelant beach who own a couple of the boats that I've seen down there for years, they say the land they are moored on is owned by the RSPB but Hayle harbour are charging them the mooring fee?
Can anyone shed light on this as I just would of thought the charity like ours could do with the extra income as opposed to a multi national company like ING who own the harbour?
Thanks all
