What is this bird, please? It has been here for hours and is trying to pick off sparrows as they come to feed. it flies away and returns frequently.

Thank you Linda257. I thought of sparrowhawk but it is very brown. Not a bit of the usual blue grey I would expect. But certainly it is behaving as I would expect a sparrowhawk to. Sorry about the quality of the photo.

Blue grey is the male sprawk and the brown is the juveniles/ immature and females..Could still be learning how to catch its meal

Ah... that makes sense. Thanks. It’s taken up position beside the bird feeder, caught one unsuspecting sparrow (sadly?) and seems to be resident now.

Yeah I have a male constantly flying in and out the garden...lucky if he gets one meal a day ...circle of life and all that ;-) I would be sad if mines didn't visit as he's such a pretty boy ;-)

We had a male that visited our last garden, would swoop in grab its prey and swoop out again in seconds. This one is sitting in full view, almost, just waiting for them to come to her!

Yes they are very acrobatic....yours sounds like it's one of this year's youngsters...still learning ;-)
