Black Grouse Lek in Upper Teesdale in County Durham

This is a Black Grouse Lek filmed in Upper Teesdale under licence. No one should ever try to get close to any leks independently as any disturbance could be disastrous. I have been on an official guided walk at dawn with one of the wardens on an official booked guided walk to see one of the Black Grouse Leks many years ago, but from a very distant safe place and the wardens had scopes so everyone could see the Lek. This wasn’t filmed by me! There is only one game bird or former game bird that is protected 100% by law and is a Schedule 1 protected by lswand that is the Capercaillie. Even the Ptarmigan is not protected outside of the nesting season. What protects the Ptarmigan is that nearly always the Ptarmigan is found 3000 feet above sea level in Scotland and mainly in the Cairngorms. The Capercaillie didn’t get 100% protection until around 2004.

Ian.
