This is a 4 minute film by Chris Packham about how the UK 1962-1963 winter(the big freeze) affected the UK’s wild bird population and some birds changed there diet during that long winter when the sea froze. It’s reckoned that half the UK’s wild bird population died during that winter. Very deep snow covered the whole of the UK for 10 weeks starting in most area’s on Boxing Day 1962 and lasted until early March 1963. It’s reckoned as well that January 1963 was the coldest month in the UK for most area’s in the UK for over 200 years. This short film by Chris Packham is towards the end of this one day Winterwatch special from 2013. Link now working! I was 10 years old during 1962-1963. There will be others who remember the 1962-1963 winter(the big freeze)
Regards,
Ian.
