The big freeze of 1962-1963 and the tragedy of the number of birds that died!

-For those that are old enough to remember the big freeze of 1962-1963 and of sadly half the UK’s population of wild birds in the UK are said to have died in that winter. There are lots of films of that winter available to see on the internet.

This was a documentary from Channel 5 and shows how bad the winter of 1962-1963 winter lasting just short of 3 months and how the UK managed during that winter and also the reason the 1962-1963 winter lasted so long with deep snow. All of the football and horse racing was cancelled and also about half of the UK’s wild bird population died. The best documentary about the 1962-1963 winter in my opinion.. Although I started a thread on the same subject. This Channel 5 documentary goes into more depth about this winter. This Channel 5 documentary lasts just short of 1 hour long. This Channel 5 documentary I think was broadcast in 2021. I was 12 years old during the winter of 1962-1963.

  • Thanks for the link Ian, I remember it well, last year of my engineering apprenticeship and I had to get 7 miles to work 6 days a week, " It's tuff up North innit" We still managed to birdwatch locally and it was terrible picking up and disposing of them.
