Hi there

I have been having a chat to my former employer (Head of department) on the phone this afternoon.   He has mentioned that he was given an award last year, and the link states why he got the award.  I feel total admiration for him with all what he has contributed to wildlife and he is delighted with all the feedback he has been getting for all his hard work.

As well as working on all the projects to improve the wildlife in the area, he has had a lot to do with assisting the local bird population.

In one of my posts on the RSPB, I mentioned that there have been a lot of Oyster Catchers living in the car park at an Oil Refinery in Scotland, and it is mentioned in the link.  It appears there are still a colony of 6 pairs of Oyster Catchers nesting in the car park as they always have done from all the years ago (very pleased to hear that)

Along with the Oyster catchers there are various BoP's on the site, and that is good news too.  A weak Kestrel was rescued the other day due to being, weak and undernourished.   The same bird was mobbed by the Crows.  The Crows must have sensed that the bird was an easy target so picked on the bird.

Voles had been seen in the area, along with all the natural habitats that have been formed to attract wildlife to the area.  Lots of bird boxes have been placed to attract wild birds.

Lots of things to read about the area now and a lot of catching up to do with a special friend too.  I have has his consent to add the details about the award.

Well done to him, and all his hard work!

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy,

thanks for sharing this with us.  Congratulations to your former employer on the award.  Anyone who works so hard for wildlife gets my admiration.

  • Hi Kathy,

I agree with Paul. All congratulations to your friend and former employer on the award. Pity more large companies can't do the same. Pleased to see the oystercatchers are still there.

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi Paul

Thank you for your kind words.

I have mentioned this forum to him too.  I am sure he will have a look in sometime.

The thing that he told me was that his work was rewarded abroad but not in the UK.  The UK press where not interested in a story to highlight all the hard work that he did do.

It shows that the 'press' only seen to like the 'negative' aspects of wildlife over the 'positive' aspects of wildlife.

My friend deserves some recognition in the UK too.

Just hope this is a chance to give a bit of encouragment for him

    Regards

    Hi Sparrow

Thank you again for all your praise and kind words.

It is good that large companies are making that extra effort to become more green and support environmental issues.

I hope it spread the word to others who can do their bit for wildlife.

The Oystercatchers are still there ... I was amazed to hear that though less in number than what they used to be.

When I worked at Exxon there was a lot of land surrounding the large industry, and it was in a remote area.  So I am glad that the land has been updated so it is a lot more wildlife friendly now.

Lets hope he has an award from the UK instead of the USA next time around

    Regards

  • I hope it is too Kathy, sounds like he deserves it!

I agree with you and have said it before, at times the UK media (the ones that have a majority following) do not seem to mention any wildlife aspects.  These days if its not about a celebrity cheating on his/her partner it doesn't seem anyone's interested!

Its a sorry state of affairs.

Not quite connected but I also noticed Crufts had very little media coverage this year - in fact i don't even recall seeing the Best In Show dog featuring in most of the newspapers!

  • Hi Kathy

Thanks for sharing that with us.

Well done to him for all of his hard work and many congratulations on his award. :-))

    Best wishes Chris

The BBC pulled out last year due to concerns over the way the Kennel Club was refusing to change some of the breed standards in order to promote healthier dogs. This year Channel 4 covered it, and in my opinion did a better job than the BBC ever did. The KC is still behaving badly, in my opinion, which is possibly why the newspapers are reluctant to offer much coverage.

Sorry Kathy, back to your topic. I also hope he receives some National acclaim, and wish him luck.

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi Sparrow

    No worries {wink}

I did not know the issues with Crufts.  The things we find out.  Though I did see a TV programme about over breeding dogs so maybe that was the connection with Crufts.

By the way the other thing i wanted to mention is my friend has been lucky to have Peregrine Falcons in his 'special' area too.  That would be a dream to see.

I really hope that the 'press' change their point of view and print out stories like this thread has shown

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Sparrow,

I was aware of the BBC's and Pedigree's reasons for pulling out of Crufts, but thank you for that :o).  I just meant I found it odd how it didn't seem to get a mention pretty much anywhere.  I did go on Sunday and it was incredibly busy.  Dog breeding fascinates me, and I adore dogs, but at times my opinion shifts on showing - depending on how I see the dogs treated.

Sorry Kathy for hijacking your thread!  Peregrines you say? Wow!  How wonderful!  I agree, that would be such a dream come true to see.  I've only ever seen a Peregrine at Warwick Castle and it just isn't the same is it?

  • Very well deserved and nice to know that there are such awards out their for worthy actions!!
