Today's Headlines!

My Two Goldfinches are now three.  They came very late at about 5ish and two stayed quite a while but the third only for a very short time.  Glad they are back as did not see them last week at all. (They could have been while I was at work though)

My bluetits are also now three in number and seem to have completely changed their food preferences,  They always went straight for the suet block with an occasional peanut.  This last few days they have however switched to the mixed seed I have for the sparrows and sunflower hearts with the occasional nyger seed as well.

Just when you think you've got it sussed they up and change their minds!

Still very happy about the increased numbers.

Sarah

PS Did get a picture of goldfinches will upload shortly when I remember where my camera lead is!!!!

Found it! Pics as promised

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

  • Hi Sparrow, I know, I'm all doom and gloom at the minute, all the the birds are busy doing other things I suppose ( judging by your collared dove picture ) that was great by the way, they will soon be back having to build their strength up again LOL !! , another thing thats got me down is, I have now decided I'm getting the same camera you have, and have purchased a teleconversion lense for my camera which will also fit the lumix like you have, thought it would satisfy my urge to get out there taking pictures until my birthday, but every time I go out with it, it seems all wildlife in suffolk runs for the hills, I've got nothing yet, even in my Mums garden where there is always deer or rabbits munching on the lawn, nothing!!! she says they disappear as soon as I turn up they'll be back when your gone, so I'm dying to try out my new lens and all I can get is birds in my garden, which are slowly running for the hills too.

Love the pictures Sarah, feels a bit like rubbing salt in the wounds. ( only kidding ) you enjoy them, it's great their hanging about.

  • Great pictures Sarah. My Goldies went down to 4 -5 from about 12 - 14 in Summer , but I saw an amazing sight about 5 p.m. tonight a flock (charm I think is the correct word) of more than 20 over the garden. It was the noise that made me look , they were only there for seconds but it was wonderful. Hope this means they are back in force. They must be like humans and like a change now and again so as long as there is variety in food we should please them all

  • I think we should form a Cartel, and stop telling new people to buy nyjer seed and goldfinch flockers. Otherwise there won't be enough to go round.

Since I got my camera I have been learning to look in all the trees in the neighbouring gardens, even those several gardens away. I am in danger of being arrested for being a peeping tom because I do this from my upstairs office window where I can see everything. I have been amazed at the different birds in the trees - and it won't be long before the leaves come so they will be hidden. Try doing this Bishy,  your new lens should pick them out. Having said that, I saw something I thought was a male chaffinch and took the picture quickly without looking properly. It turned out to be a clothes peg on a washing line many gardens away!!!!

    Cheers, Linda.

LOL !! What are you like, I hope you get on well with your neighbours, I did see something in someones garden today as I drove past I think it was a red legged Partridge only caught a glimpse, I did think about slamming on my brakes and going and taking a picture of that I'm getting desperate, but thought better of it, I don't know if they would have appreciated that LOL.

That sounds distinctly like the sort of thing I do Linda. I take pictures from the upstairs window and I am just waiting for a knock on the door !!!

  • Me too with the pictures.  I got the biniculars out the other day, but I am overlooked at the back by maisonettes and the woman in the upstairs window gave me a very strange look.  She is new to the area so probably thinks i'm barking.

I had a conversation with a Sparrow in a shrub today.  He is there everyday and it over hangs the pavement and he sings his little heart out, The old lady whose garden he is in looked very disapproving I can tell you. (must take a picture if I can manage it without getting arrested!)

  • Well I'm picture-less!  I will add it to that mental thread list I say I have going :o)

I too can report having Goldies too - a pair for 4 days (woohoo!), oddly enough they didn't touch the nyger seed feeder.  Instead they ate from the hanging tray feeder at the top of the garden and enjoyed RSPB No Mess Sunflower Mix.

Oh and I had a Greenfinch the other day too!.  Amazing, I'm suddenly getting finches, lol!

  • Well done Paul for your finches. Fingers crossed they stay.

    Cheers, Linda.
