Snow In Scotand

Hi everyone north of the border.

The weather reports for Scotland sound horrendous. It would be good to hear from Forum members how you are coping with the conditions and what effect it is having on wildlife.

Meanwhile down here in the south we are basking in a balmy 8 deg C but it's pouring with rain - so no change there.

  • Well its 3 deg C in the North East and we had snow Monday & Tuesday but it didn't hang around for long. The feeders are still very busy but signs of birds pairing up. It all makes for a long hot Summer - I'm a dreamer !!

  • I have a friend who lives on the Shetland Islands and they have had shed loads over the past few days. He said some of the villages are already cut off and as fast as he puts food out for the birds it is buried by the snow before they can get to it..

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi Tee Jay.

The weather in parts of Scotland has certainly been quite horrendous in places.  Where I live, which is roughly halfway between Glasgow and Cumbernauld.  We had a few inches of snow yesterday.  On a very local level, we've had a fair bit of light rain today, so much of the snow is being washed away.  Although any untreated roads and pavements could become pretty dangerous if temperatures drop severely.  At the moment Glasgow is in the grips of the heatwave known as 4°C, with light rain.  Thankfully I've not had to cope with frozen bird baths and a frozen outside tap.  Which is helpful to say the least.  Anyway enough of my ramblings.  Here's a link to an Evening Times article on the weather.

    Hi Birdwatcher.

Brilliant optimism.  Of course it's only fair that a cold winter should be a sign of a warm summer.

  • Hi

I live in Cumbernauld area and we got 6 inches of snow yesterday. It stopped about 11am this morning and is still here though it seems to be raining  now.  Locals spent about 45 mins digging out cars.  Roads are  quite bad with lots of adandoned cars on local roads.

Garden was busy with my  4 reed buntings and  one  redwin, blackies and robins  and  starlings making up the rest  of visitors. Still no one using my  seed feeders. I am now totally convinced its the seed mix (Gardman Seed Supreme) so will be spreading it on the ground for the ferals and going back to black sunflower seeds Home made mix of porridge oats with suet and raisins seemed to go down well.

  • None here on the Solway coast - it tried Wed morning but couldn't stick on top of the overnight rain.  Today not even frost as it had been cloudy.  "Mild" at 6 degrees and dry all day.  Birds filled up yesterday when it was acually falling - all very quiet today.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Yes, it is true, we have snow. Children sent home. cars stuck, roads closed. Power lines down just up the road. Couple of days off work, shame! Its turning to rain now.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
