Hello Folks! Fungi come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Whilst some are edible, others are poisonous and best avoided. They can be found almost everywhere and are often easily overlooked. Many can be seen in woodland and meadow, especially at this time of year. Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK fungus. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.MYSTERY FUNGI QUIZ #6Clue: A cake fit for Wessex Royalty.
MrsT keeps throwing curved balls, or ellipsoid ones in the case of rugby. I think we've got it Seaman. MrsT is just being devious and trying to throw us off the scent.

Bit lost here TJ unless it is the concentrica in the Latin which may make difficult for ball games but cannot for the life of me think of the first part of the Latin name trying hard not to cheat but it is tempting.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
I can only think it would be difficult to play any sort of ball game with those hard knobbly fungi. Otherwise I'm stumped. See how I worked cricket into that. LOL

Is that a bit of MrsT's influence rubbing off through the forum.
I'm sticking with Alfies burnt buns
I think this is one that the boys might get!
Something to do with the Earle of Wessex. Perhaps a fungus with Edward in its name and shaped like a cake ( sorry but my fungus knowledge stops at button mushrooms, although I do like walking on my local common to look for different types of fungus)

Boys eh! I'll settle for that.
Me too TJ as long as the "old" bit is not added, just approaching late middle age LOL
I cannot possibly comment on that. Answer tomorrow.
Spiny Puffball ?? ROFL !!
I thought, with you saying cricket, tennis, rugby, etc., there had to be a ball involved so then had to do a tad of research with ball in mind to come up with this fungi. The Latin name (as an anagram) has the word Royal in it and also Ed (for Edward) but can't get anything else so it's probably unlikely . I still think it's got a ball in the name though with your clue !!!!!
