MYSTERY INSECT QUIZ#5

Hello Folks!

Be they big or small, insects are undoubtedly highly fascinating creatures. Chances are wherever you are, whatever you're doing, an insect is not a million miles away and you might not even know it! So what better reason than to have a quiz to see how much you know about them.

Each Monday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the insect. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.

MYSTERY INSECT QUIZ#5
Beech duly charter.

  • Congratulations to all of who guessed Churchyard beetle (Blaps mucronata)! The first clue was an anagram, as you may have guessed. The second clue on wednesday: Though my name may suggest I have quiet neighbours, you are more likely to find me in a cave! Without wishing to upset anyone, the human inhabitants of churchyards are silent and are therefore ‘quiet neighbours’.

Despite the dramatic name, Churchyard beetles are fairly unassuming looking creatures and are found in cellars, caves and other dark damp places. They are dull black in colour, 20-30mm in length, and although they lack the bristles and have a smaller head, they often mistaken for Ground beetles. Partial to vegetable matter and debris, Churchyard beetles release an unpleasant smell when disturbed. A picture of a Churchyard beetle can be found here.

Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery insect quiz!

  • Wow - can't believe it and it was a reluctant Mr Pud too as he was reading his book and I made him help me with the anagram.  No good at insects, just like anagrams so as it is unlikely that Mrs T will do another one I'm sure that was a 'one hit wonder' - still dead chuffed though:-)

Yes, did drive me batty trying, Ray and yes, Caroline, have definitely got hooked in now:-)

    Off-line now til Sunday night.

  • Well done Pudweena.  Missed a couple of these, not that I have a hope of getting one, but I'll be looking in on next week's.

  • Good thinking, Pudweena. I am absolutely ignorant about beetles but this is a good quiz. Worked out church and beetle but couldn't make sense of the rest of the letters. Well done!
